Recipe information

  • Yield

    Makes 6 drinks.

Ingredients

5 1/4 cups red wine
1 teaspoon of whole cloves
1 teaspoon whole allspice
1/2 teaspoon cracked peppercorns
2 cinnamon sticks, broken into pieces
3/4 cup Cognac

Preparation

  1. Pour the red wine into an enamel saucepan and add a spice bag containing the cloves, allspice, cracked peppercorns, and the cinnamon sticks. Let the mixture stand for 1 hour and bring it just to the boiling point, covered, over moderately low heat. Remove the pan from the heat and let the mixture stand, covered, for 5 minutes. Discard the spice bag and stir in the Cognac, warmed. Divide the spiced wine among six 10-ounce heat-proof mugs, rinsed with boiling water beforehand.
